Duration

4 months

Stage 1. User Research & Problem Identification

In the initial phase, the primary focus was understanding the challenges users face with managing cluttered photo galleries on their devices. Two user personas were developed: one represents busy individuals who struggle to keep their photos organized, and the other represents younger users who enjoy a more playful, gamified experience. Both personas highlighted the frustrations of searching through thousands of photos and videos, along with the lack of fun and engaging solutions available in current apps.

Stage 2. Ideation & Conceptualization

The ideation process revolved around creating a solution that makes sorting photos enjoyable and productive. Brainstorming sessions led to the concept of a gamified photo-sorting app named Pixel Pond. Features were designed to appeal to both user personas, with game modes like "Tinder-style" swiping for fast decisions and “Grid Sorting” for a more organized approach. Additionally, sorting achievements and personalized progress stats were added to encourage consistent use. Wireframes and sketches were created to visualize key user interactions, from the onboarding tutorial to daily sorting sessions.

Stage 3. Design Execution

High-fidelity wireframes were developed in Adobe XD, focusing on a clean, playful interface that reflects the app’s fun and simple nature. Special attention was given to intuitive navigation, making sure users could seamlessly move between game modes, check progress, and access settings. Prototypes of the core features were tested, with an emphasis on smooth transitions and ensuring game modes were easy to understand and enjoyable to use. The final UI design combines a vibrant, inviting look with functional layouts.

Stage 4. Usability Testing & Refinement

Usability testing was conducted with participants from different demographics. Users were asked to perform key tasks, such as sorting photos in various game modes and navigating through their personalized stats and achievements. Feedback was collected, highlighting minor adjustments needed for game instructions and navigation. Based on this, refinements were made to improve clarity, reduce friction in the onboarding process, and enhance overall user flow. The testing also revealed that users enjoyed the gamified sorting process and found it motivating.

Stage 5. Final Presentation & Documentation

The final prototype of Pixel Pond was presented, demonstrating the core features and user journey, from logging in to completing sorting sessions. A detailed documentation package was created, including user personas, wireframes, design decisions, and usability testing insights. The app’s functionality was showcased, along with how it successfully integrates game-like elements into practical photo organization.

Reflections

This project reinforced the value of integrating playfulness into a practical utility app. Pixel Pond effectively combines functionality with fun, allowing users to manage their photos in a way that feels less like a chore and more like a game. A significant challenge was balancing usability for different personas, particularly ensuring that the gamification didn’t overshadow the app's primary goal: helping users declutter their photo galleries. The testing phase was particularly insightful, as user feedback directly influenced key refinements, improving both the onboarding experience and gameplay features.
